Mersea Island “Mersea Island is a very small island and I’ve only lived here for about nine years. It is a very close community and when I first came onto the island I started to get involved as a supporter. They had two senior teams at the time as a small club. In 2015, Steve Daniels approached a few of us about the possibility of forming a junior section. We’d never had one before and having been at other clubs I had seen how much difference a strong junior section could have so, along with quite a few others, I stepped forward and it went from there. I’m essentially a salesman and went out to sell the club to try and raise money because we rely on the generosity of sponsors and individuals in terms of their time and financial support. I started as the sponsor manager for the juniors and have been working to make sure they have the equipment and facilities they need to play rugby in a safe and enjoyable environment. When I took over we had three or four sponsors for the whole club and now we have thirty plus sponsors. The rise of the club has been really rapid and we are very fortunate that Mersea Island is a very tight, generous community and the people here provide us with fantastic support. I believe sponsorship should mean just that; it shouldn’t mean donations or approaching people with a begging bowl because we like throwing a silly shaped ball around at the weekend! With this in mind we work hard to give back to our sponsors making sure that we deliver value and show them how grateful we are for their continued support. I took on the role as President eighteen months ago across the whole club and I’m very proud to have that role. The most important thing for us is for people to come along and enjoy rugby here. We are doing that at the moment and so long as we continue to do that we will continue to thrive and grow. Personally, I’ve loved the chance to be able to support this rugby club in the work that it does and seeing the young players here develop is very rewarding. As well as that I’ve built a huge circle of friends on the island and that is what makes the club so special to me.” Colin Morgan, President www.rugbyclubmag.com 51
