FOOTBALL CLUB

Wasps FC is a fine example of a well-run , community establishment that plays an important role in their local area . Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with their Chairman Richard Green to find out more about the good work that they ’ ve been doing lately .
RC : How long have you been involved and what first attracted you to the club ?
RG : 12 years . I played all my “ proper ” rugby in France , but found myself in London with a seven year old who was keen to start . Wasps had the nearest minis section so I went down for a look . I found a vibrant set-up of earnest dads mixing with the likes of Sean Edwards , Raphael Ibanez and Trevor Leotta . It was relaxed but the rugby and atmosphere was really good .
Rugby had gone professional 10 years earlier , but it still felt like a family club . Soon I was playing again , and a year or two later I was running the mens section . Then the old boys decided it was time to hand over to us youngsters , and I ’ ve now been chairman of the amateur club for nearly 5 years .
RC : What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your role ?
RG : We ’ re the only Club with a London postcode which owns its ground - all 24 acres of it , no debts or anything . We ’ re sitting on an incredible asset that ’ s been passed down through the generations .
