Liz Gedye of club sponsor Tanners Solicitors LLP
recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about her
positive association with Chippenham RFC. She
told us, “It was really through my son’s friends and
my partner, David Roderick’s love of rugby and his
encouragement of our boys that I became involved
with the club.”
Involvement
He told us, “I have been a member of the club for 18 years
having moved into the area from Sussex. I already knew
the club as my father in law had been club captain in 1959
and I had in fact come to the clubs opening event when they
moved from the previous ground to Allington Fields in 1992.
The club were ideally located to where I lived and so I joined
the club with the intention of playing a few social games in
the 3rd team.”
The Role
“The club has some 1000 members and is a limited
company run by volunteers. The most challenging part
of the role is to act in a professional, business-like manner
regarding the strategy and objectives that the club wants
to achieve whilst relying on volunteers to provide the time
and support to get things done. The most rewarding part
“Both my sons played for Chippenham, Tom from
U6s to U12s, Luke played from U6s to U10s, David
too has turned out for the odd game and I became
team manager for four years dealing with all the team’s
administration work. Although my boys no longer play
it is a hope of mine and David’s that one day they will
return to the club.
“As a company, Tanners Solicitors have had a very
long association with Chippenham Rugby Club both
George Burges, retired partner, and Hugo Richardson
have been great supporters of the club and the
community work they have carried out over the years.
“I still have many friends at Chippenham Rugby and
receive regular updates on how well the teams have
performed this year. I have much admiration for the
team of volunteers who go beyond the call of duty year
in year out. It’s great to hear that the club have been
recognised for their contribution to local sport this year
and I would like to wish everyone down at Allington
Fields the very best of success for the future!”
