families from all walks of life. We have a fantastic clubhouse
which has undertaken a great deal of refurbishment in recent
times and our members treat it as if it was their own
home.
We have in the last few years erected some
floodlights which have more than paid for
themselves already, our next plan is to
install a balcony on the playing side of
the clubhouse with access for disabled
visitors, and to create a ladies changing
area rather than having to use the
men’s changing rooms.”
Challenges
“Keeping t he club afloat financially
is always the toughest challenge but we
have done that successfully for every one of
85 years so far. We don’t receive a great deal
from donations and we are very grateful to local
businesses for the sponsorships they give us, and we don’t
have a local rich business tycoon bankrolling us, although we
could be open to offers!
It is also about making the club itself and its facilities
attractive because in the area where we are there are 20 other
rugby clubs within a short radius playing to various senior
standards from grade 3 level in National League 1,
down to grade 10 level in Kent 2.”
not come straight back down via relegation as often happens
with newly promoted sides. We are aiming to finish mid table in
the next season and then try and push for promotion
the following year. We know that moving up a
league is a massive step. Anything we achieve
in the national or county cups will be seen
as a bonus.
We also would like our ladies to
continue in their league and to win more
games than they lose and to encourage
new ladies to come and join us, and we
want our minis and junior to continue
to flourish as they are the envy of many
clubs as we always punch above our
weight for such a small club. Our trophy
cabinet from the youth section is fully
stocked and about to run out
of room, but it won’t stop
them from winning even
more!”
