I’ve sponsored the club for a few years on and off and it is great to see them doing so well; there is a buzz in the whole community. I’d encourage those involved to keep up the good work – everyone is really proud of the club.” Mason Construction Building, Renovation & Fireplace Specialist Stonework • Plastering • Roofing Stewart Mason: 07966 176588 | Scott Mason: 07727 284039 email: [email protected] address: 55 Fore Street, Buckfastleigh. TQ110BS Proud sponsor of Buckfastleigh Ramblers RFC Buckfastleigh Ramblers RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB Buckfastleigh Ramblers is a fine example of a well-run club and have been enjoying a fine campaign this season. Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with Chairman Nick Wadge to find out more about the good work they’ve been doing. Involvement He told us, “I have been involved with the club for three years. I was first attracted to the club to provide first aid cover for matches by having two nephews playing combined with some additional players I knew from my previous involvement in a colts team. I was then elected to the committee and then became the chairman of the club in 2017.” The Role “The most challenging aspect of my work is managing the finances of the club. We have no source of income as we are tenants at the local sports club. However, through the efforts of the committee and in particular our team manager Steve Lebirck and our secretary Donna Spicer we have managed to obtain sponsorship for all our players from 96 Issue 77 local businesses and undertaken a range of fundraising events. The most rewarding aspect is to see such a young team develop into a force to be reckoned with on the pitch combined with the pleasure and comradeship of all involved to that end.” and set this year as a platform for us to build on.” 25th Anniversary “We had a sponsor’s day for our first match of the season to thank them for all their help. Without the local support the team would struggle to survive. The main sponsor since the start of the club has been Celtic Rock Cutting Services who again has sponsored a new kit for us. The shorts carry their first logo combined with silver anniversary notation. We have another sponsor’s day in the planning and we also have a testimonial game at the end of the season for Greg Robinson who has played over 400 games for the club.” Present “We were unbeaten in the 2017 season and there is a great feeling at the club. We have a new coaching set up which is building on the foundations of the previous coach and the team is really enjoying their rugby. We aim to maintain our push to win the league and have started with a heard fought win away to Ilfracombe and we are using that as a platform for continued success in the remaining league matches.” Community “The ramblers are a very community based club with all our players coming from within a short distance of the town. Several players are members of the young farmers organisation which has strong ties within the area. We also involve ourselves in local charity events. The most recent was a quiz night to raise funds for a cancer charity with links to a club member. We have connections with the local community by arranging bingo nights as fundraisers but also participate in local events like town fayres etc. We are also supported by Buckfast Abbey.” Commercial “All players are sponsored by local businesses. We are extremely grateful to all are sponsors. We also receive sponsorship from The Grove group towards training kit and also kit bags etc. The sponsorship money covers the running of the club and our rental and insurance requirements”. Challenges/Ambitions “Our biggest challenges include financial, the retention of players, retention of committee, retention of our support team and compliance with regulation/legislation. Our ambitions are to maintain our position in the league, gain promotion, grow the squad and retain our financial position.” Atmosphere “The club is in a good place financially and is currently unbeaten in the 2017/18 league season. We have worked hard with the team building their skills over three seasons www.rugbyclubmag.com 97
