Bexley Warminster FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Bexley RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB across many backgrounds ranging from tradesmen to the military. RC: What do you believe could be some of the biggest challenges the club may face in the coming years? RR: We have struggled with our top end of the youth - we haven’t had a colts team for a few years meaning that we have not had a feeder to the senior for a few years. That has put strain on our recruitment strategies. RC: What are the clubs ambitions for the next five years? RR: We would most definitely be looking to run a ladies team, as already mentioned we have a thriving girls section so would be aspiring to keep developing and nurturing that group to create a ladies team. We would also be looking to set up and maintain a 3rd XV to create more playing opportunities and having a team to suit all levels and aspirations for players. On the playing side we would like for our teams to achieve promotion to challenge ourselves at a higher level. Finally, we would love to maintain all the good work within our mini and juniors section. We have some areas that need attention to fulfill their potential. But as a club we are always looking to progress so we are constantly planning and aiming to improve. They are led by the team of President Kevin Cope and Chair Keith Rutter and the club is looking to progress under their guidance. So far this season they have put together a solid league campaign, having compiled a record of seven wins and six defeats from their thirteen matches. This has left them sitting in the top half of the table with thirty five points on the board. This will provide them with a good platform from which to push on in the closing stages of the season. As long as they can keep their current group of players together they should be in with a good chance of putting together a positive run of form. One of the highlights of the team’s performances has been the attacking brand of rugby that they have been able to produce. This has been reflected in their points, tally having scored a total of 397 at a rate of more than thirty per game. This will certainly have meant that any supporters attending their matches will have been well entertained and should encourage more of the local community to get behind the side in future. This in turn has the potential to provide the club with a valuable source of additional revenue which is particularly important in the current financial climate. Bexley is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section and they also run a mini section. This part of the club looks to provide young players from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club looking to be successful over a sustained period of time to be able to produce their own talent and this is clearly an area Bexley is working on. It will certainly be exciting to see how their youngsters can progress over the coming years. Bexley is a club that is committed to playing an important role in their local community and this is demonstrated by the fact that they also run additional sides. This allows them to give far more players an opportunity to play the game every week. Another benefit of having additional teams is that it allows the first XV to benefit from far greater strength in depth. If they are ever left short on numbers through injury or work commitments they have the option of calling up replacements with a limited amount of disruption. Bexley RFC is a fine example of the important role that a club can play in their local community. If they continue in the same manner then they should be able to look forwards to a bright and successful future for many years to come. Rugby Club Magazine wishes them the best of luck.
