near the top of North One East. Our President also secured a
LEADER grant which in 2018 will be used to extend our car
park, provide more hard standing for caravans in the summer
and refurbish our kitchen. We aim to challenge for the league
title this year. Our young forwards battle gallantly, often against
heavier more experienced packs whilst our running backs are
the envy of the league. We will also in 2018 be reviving Women’s
Rugby at Alnwick RFC. The U15 girls have been joined by a
group of senior ladies and we are arranging a Launch day on
April 28th when we hope to host Northumberland v Cumbria.
Youth Rugby is strong at the club and the hard work of the
coaches pays dividends with nearly all of the 1st team coming
from the immediate area. Like most clubs we face the challenge
of encouraging more young people to stay in the game post 18.
Our aim is to get three teams and a colts team out each Saturday,
although it is proving increasingly difficult.
We are very much a community club with the clubhouse
being used by a diversity of groups including fishing, debating,
chess, flower arranging and motor clubs, the local school for
counselling and a number of voluntary organisations. We enjoy
generous local sponsorship of all home matches.
The ambitions for the club in the next few years reflect the
challenges it faces. We need to halt the decline in player numbers
and somehow capitalise on the success and achievement of the
senior side. We have also to some extent, lost the volunteer ethos
with fewer people involved in the running of the club. The age
profile of the volunteers is also a concern. However, when one
looks at those involved in the mini/junior, the girls/women’s
section of the club, the dedication of the present committee
and young players coming through, Alnwick RFC should look
forward to a successful future.
