Roger was a great guy and I always had time for him and respected him. Everyone new Roger and he will be sorely missed, not only as a friend, but a very valuable member of our local community!” Dillwyn Davies and Roger Kendal FLOWERS BY JOY City & Guilds Qualified 29. She recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I am from Merthyr but have many friends in Aberdare as many of our customers are associated with the Rugby Club. Roger Kendal and his wife Linda were known to me; they were frequent visitor to our shop and always gifted me a nice bottle of wine each year. Roger will be sadly missed by many in our community; he was a straight talking gentleman and did a huge amount of valuable work for the rugby club. It’s great to hear the teams are doing well this season and as a club sponsor for 21 years myself and staff all wish the club the very best for the next 21 years!” We are immensely proud that we have this opportunity to share our clubs history, but it’s even more important that we should recognise characters that have made a lasting contribution to all our clubs. Two such people who were sadly lost during 2017, were Dillwyn Davies and Roger Kendal. In their own way they placed a high value on being a member of the club and committee. Dilwyn played for the club, but such was his love of the game when he retired he committed himself to ensuring the club endured. As secretary he gave even more time to promoting the club and its purpose. Dilwyn held the clubs history in his hand, knowledge which he used effectively to guide the clubs development. Dilwyn believed in the clubs future, he deserved the respect he gained, he believed and as a result so did we. Roger, was just as steadfast, his contribution was immense, he left a memory of who he was and what he did. A man of conviction loyalty and courage. He was such a positive person with a real clarity of purpose; once he decided to do something it was as good as done. Each year, like a good hunter gatherer he would trawl the town seeking sponsorship, he was extremely successful, for many it was easier to contribute than refuse. He loved the game of rugby - to him it was important that the club created every opportunity it could to provide an outlet for young people to engage with rugby. Both Dilwyn and Roger were made life members of the club for the work they did. They leave memories that will endure, it will not be the same, without either of you. Quite simply we thank both of you; it was an education, honour and pleasure to meet you. Article provided by John Wrangham, Club Secretary www.rugbyclubmag.com 113
