the late and sadly missed Huw Davies that
I first became associated with the club and
then got to know Dai Hobbs. The club have
always had a great community emphasis and
do a fabulous job, in not only turning out so
many senior sides, but fostering such a vibrant
youth section.
Unfortunately due to work commitments I
don’t get down to the club as often as I would
like but the feedback is again very positive
and another successful season is on the
cards. I played a little myself in my school
days mainly on the wing and enjoy the 6
Nations when it comes around. Myself and
everyone at Mannsell’s would like to wish all
those associated with Rhiwbina Rugby Club

Youth
John Meyers of club sponsor M & M Fixings has
had a long and positive association with Rhiwbina
RFC. He recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “It
was really through my sons Richard and Paul that
I first became involved with the club. Richard is a
current player who will usually be found on the wing
or in the centre and Paul, who is out with an injury
at the moment, also plays in the backs.
The club are enjoying another positive season and
I would encourage them all to keep up the good
work. Best wishes to everyone associated with
Rhiwbina Rugby Club for this season and for many
seasons to come!”
We have one of the largest mini and junior sections of any
club in Wales, with children playing from Under 5s to Youth
level. The M&Js is a very well-run part of the club under
Chairman Richard Price, and we have a regular development
programme for coaches at all levels under our senior coaches
Gareth Linton and Jared Lougher.
Youth rugby is vital to the club as several youth players
have graduated into the first XV squad in recent years.
Promising young players make the transition to senior level
by training with senior players and we blood them at senior
level as and when we feel they’re ready for the step up.
Challenges/Ambitions
“The biggest challenge is to ensure we can deliver the
same level of coaching and playing facilities going forward.
It’s essential that coaches are fully developed and gain
qualifications through the WRU system. Similarly we train
parents and volunteers in first aid and we encourage players
at all levels to respect referees and other coaches.
Funding is always a challenge, so we have a five year
plan in place to try to ensure that the club develops whilst
embracing our ethos of enjoyment and fair play. There are
various elements of our plan which include playing, coaching,
social, community and funding.
Or current Chairman is an ex-player and local businessman,
Ian Hall, who stresses that ‘we may be amateurs but we hope
the club is viewed as being run in a professional manner,
through a dedicated committee and a huge band of willing
volunteers.”
