Strathmore Proposed Projects Rugby Academy The Trust has identified a decrease in playing numbers across the three towns, and wider area, at secondary age and above. It has considered, after consultation with the partners, that a Rugby Academy based at Strathmore Rugby Club would provide a safe and fun learning environment to assist in the development of coaches and players. The Academy initially would operate on a Friday afternoon and provide rugby skills and tactical sessions along with health and conditioning sessions. These would be open to all secondary age pupils. Both rugby union and rugby league would be represented. Women’s and Girls Rugby A successful women’s team has operated in the area previously but proved unsustainable due to a lack of supported coaches and volunteers. The facilities at Strathmore Rugby Club and the partnership with Strathmore and Brechin Rugby Clubs along with the proposed Rugby Academy, which will cater for both males and females, provide a fresh opportunity to develop women’s/girls rugby. The Trust will recruit a coach for a senior team and support the individual(s) by coordinating the existing infrastructure and the specialist coaches available through the Rugby Academy. Touch League Touch rugby is a non-contact version of rugby league that can be played by anyone. It provides a safe and fun environment for people to keep fit and promotes teamwork and discipline. The Trust will work with its partners and their existing players to run a social league over the summer months encouraging new players to take up the sport and mix experienced and inexperienced players to create a club environment. Walking Rugby This version of the sport, which is generally new in the UK is primarily aimed at offering retired people, of both genders, a gentle, fun activity. The game will also be offered to people of any age, creating a warm and welcoming environment. The activity would be combined with a social lunch allowing the participants and supporters an opportunity to relax and socialise. John Boni and Stuart Ferrier are in their second year as 1st XV sponsors of Strathmore Rugby Club with their business S & J Joiners Ltd which has provided quality joinery and building services locally for over thirteen years. John told Rugby Club Magazine, “As a local company we started attending hospitality and corporate events at the club which was also a great way to entertain some of our clients. It’s great to see the first team performing so well this year and if they keep competing and gaining the same results in the 2nd half of the season as they have in the first they have a great chance of becoming champions. The club is very much a centre of the community and their plans for young and old alike are testament to the people running things at the club and its friendly atmosphere. Myself and Stuart would like to wish everyone associated with Strathmore Rugby Club the very best of continued success for the remainder of the 2017/2018 season!” Our Services • Kitchens and Bathrooms • Renovations / Refurbishments • • Bespoke Joinery Work • Extensions and Sun Lounges • • Windows and Doors • Loft Conversions • Hardwood Flooring • • New Builds • Small Jobbing Work • Staircases • Delighted to be the first XV sponsors of Strathmore Rugby Club 01307 460550 www.sj-joiners.co.uk [email protected] www.rugbyclubmag.com 53
