RC : How important is youth rugby to the club ?
SG : It ’ s absolutely key for us . The majority of our senior teams are now products from the junior section .
RC : Would you consider yours to be a community club ?
SG : Yes , we are used by yoga , tug of war and running clubs and have introduced a Friday night keep fit class .
RC : Could you tell us a little more about the community trust you ’ ve introduced ?
SG : The Trust was set up in June as a separate but partner organisation alongside the rugby club with the aim of increasing playing numbers , particularly at secondary age where there ’ s been a drop off across Scotland in recent years .
The flagship project of the Trust is the Rugby Academy but we ’ ve also piloted Walking Rugby for the Elderly and are planning on running rugby festivals for disabled people in the Spring .
RC : Is the club doing anything to maximise its commercial potential ?
SG : We are looking to hire a Business Development Manager to coordinate our clubhouse usage and sponsorship , building on the work of the Sponsorship Convener and Clubhouse .
Malcolm Black is an ex-player and principal club sponsor of Strathmore RFC with his Business Black & Scott Builders Ltd . He recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his positive association with the club , saying “ I was a relative late comer to rugby at the age of 21 when some friends of mine asked me to join them at the club . I started playing with the 2nds before stepping up to the 1st team in the position of winger and then settled into the scrum half role .
After six or so seasons I had to hang up my boots due to cruciate injuries and a collar bone break but I have always kept in touch with the club and my friends down there . My business Black & Scott Builders Limited are the clubs principal sponsor and I like to help out when I can including constructing the clubs new extension .
It ’ s great to see the seniors are competing well this season and I would like to wish everyone down at Strathmore Rugby club the very best of continued success for the remainder of the season !”
