Cardigan Cardigan RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB R ugby first came to Cardigan in the 1860s through the local Grammar School with matches being played against Lampeter and Llandovery. Cardigan as a club itself was formed in 1876, making them one of the oldest clubs in Wales and since then they have gone on to put together a history of which they have every right to be proud. The club disbanded during both of the Wars but were reformed on both occasions shortly after and gained membership of the Welsh Rugby Union in 1956. A new clubhouse was built in 1967 although it had to be re-built after a fire in 1969. New floodlights and a 350 all-weather stand were introduced in 1992. At present the club is based at the Clubhouse Sports Pavilion in Ceredigion and their first team competes in the WRU National League Division 3 West A. They are led by the team of Club Chairman Morris Davies and President Graham Rees and are looking to progress under their guidance. So far this season their first team has put together a solid league campaign, having compiled a record of three wins and three defeats from their six matches. This has left them sitting in a safe mid-table position with sixteen points on the board. This should provide them with a good platform from which to go on and have a successful season. As long as they are able to retain their current group of players and can perhaps make one or two quality additions they will be in with a good chance of pushing on up the league. Cardigan is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section however and this is reflected by the fact that they also have a number of youth sides in place. These teams look to provide young players from the local community with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club looking to be successful over a sustained period of time to be able to produce their own talent and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their youngsters can progress over the coming years. There is much to admire about the fine set up that Cardigan RFC currently has in place and this is thanks to all of the hard work that goes into making them a success. Hopefully they will be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come.
