By the seventies they had established themselves as a hugely successful Junior Club and went on to win three Ulster senior club titles in the 1980s. At present the club competes in the Ulster Qualifying League Division 2 and Rugby Club Magazine was keen to find out more about Ards and with this in mind we caught up with their Honorary Secretary Ian Wallace RC: What do you think has been the key to the club’s longevity? IW: The club is one of the younger in Ireland, having only been in existence since 1928. However, it continues to be supported by a small band of dedicated volunteers, something that is essential to the survival of amateur rugby in Ireland, but is increasingly becoming difficult to sustain in modern society 46 Issue 75 what with competition from other sports and people having different working practices (weekends are no longer sacrosanct).
