RUGBY CLUB
S
ince 2002, Falkirk Rugby Club has experienced an impressive period of
development across the spectrum of the sport. The First XV set an SRU
record by achieving five promotions in six seasons, reaching our highest point to
date when securing promotion to the old Premier Division Two.
During this period the Club also improved the Club’s
Ground at Sunnyside. The improvements were the installation
of a grass match-quality pitch with spectator stand, a
second grass pitch and some internal upgrading
of the Clubhouse.
In addition to the top end
performance level game and facility
development, the Club has also
dramatically expanded its
junior and youth activity.
This has grown from
around 30 young players
between 6 and 18
years old, to a current
complement of around
200 junior players
taking part every
week.
These
players
are
coached
and
developed
by
a
current cohort of 26
volunteer coaches. In
addition to the First
Team’s
and
second
team’s success and our
junior expansion, an adult
Third XV, the Sunnysiders
has been reformed as well,
and women and girls’ rugby is in
development.
Rugby Club Magazine recently
caught up with their President Matt Dodd
to find out more about the good work the club
has been doing.
Involvement
He told us, “I have been with Falkirk RFC since
1997, and started off as a player in my early
thirties and played my last First XV
at the grand old age of 43. Prior to
joining Falkirk I had been playing
with Glasgow Southern (now
GHA), however, I was living
in Falkirk. After work
took me to Edinburgh,
the travelling became
frustrating for me, as
well as the coaches
at the time as I was
often delayed due to
the volume of traffic
on the M8.
When
the
decision came to
make a change, it
was a bit of a no
brainer
moving
to Falkirk, it was
my local club and
I felt although I was
getting older I still had
plenty to offer. I was also
encouraged by my wife to
continue playing as I think
without playing rugby I was a bit
of a bear with a sore head.”
