has seen the squad gain strength in depth, particularly in the
forwards, and this has benefited particularly towards the end
of the season as injuries take their toll and the farming members
of the squad are forced to take time out for lambing duties etc.
“We realised a few years ago that we needed to build from
the mini and juniors upwards. James Bridge and Pete Chidley
took on the task of reviving the mini and junior section and
the club has invested in that through coaching, meals and
establishing satellite clubs within the local school and college.
The latter move is already paying off with several youngsters
already feeding through into the first and second teams.
A bigger squad will be essential if Ludlow win promotion
but that brings its own challenges.
“The playing squad is building nicely but the challenge for
us has been to find games for our second team. A good many of
our traditional second team opposition teams are struggling to
maintain two sides throughout the season,” says Wright.
“We have to work hard to ensure that all our squad players
get a game and that they enjoy themselves while playing.
Another challenge is to find somewhere that we can train
in all weathers. Our own ground is next to the River Corve and
the water table being high it means it is sometimes difficult to
find ground we can train on without cutting it up and making it
unusable. The local football club has an all weather surface but
it doesn’t come cheap.
Off the field the club is planning a major sustainability
project which will see ground source water used to heat the
clubhouse, changing rooms and showers. Photovoltaic panels
will also be installed to provide electricity.
“These are our biggest bills currently and if we can eliminate
them and provide a source of income into the bargain it will be a
major bonus for the club. We are also taking the opportunity to
install new ladies and disabled toilets and a snug area in the bar.
“As we seek to place the club more at the centre of the
community we recognise that a clubhouse built originally
to cater for a predominance of males now needs to cater for
a mixed audience. A single ladies loo just won’t do. We need
proper toilets, baby changing facilities etc.,” says Wright.
Meanwhile, with the club at the top of the league having
scored almost 1,000 points in 20 matches, spirits are pretty high.
“The challenge will be to play as well as we have next season
in a tougher league but we are confident that we can do that,”
says Wright.
