Rugby Club Magazine recently caught up with their President Garry Tough to find out more about the work they’ve been doing lately. Involvement He told us, “I started coaching S1 in 2011 in support of my step-son who was, and still is, at the club. It was an opportunity to give something back to the game that I had enjoyed personally and got so much from over the years. The biggest challenge of my role is keeping momentum going and in the right direction! The club is, and will be into the foreseeable future, driven by a volunteer engine. Ensuring there is a clearly communicated plan that is consistently acted upon over time to ensure it is achieved is vital.” Atmosphere “The club is on a high right now as we have had some terrific news about several of our U16 players being selected to play regional representative rugby. We have just re-launched a 2nd XV, our U18 team is progressing in the cup, our 1st XV continue to push for the 2nd place slot in their league and we have just opened a 3G, all-weather, floodlit facility to ensure we have all-year round rugby.” This Season “We have had an immense season with representative selection, a growing junior pool (mini) and coaching pool along with development of our new 3G facility. We continue to work hard to implement our plan and are seeing clear benefits year-on-year. 22 Issue 70 We are coming to a close for this season so we want to ensure we deliver on the upgrade to our infrastructure for this year, continue to attract corporate support for next season, bring as much success to our 1st XV and U18 campaigns as is possible and continue to provide a thriving and enjoyable place to play rugby.” Youth “Youth rugby is absolutely vital to us. Without a thriving and successful youth section, any amateur club eventually will die. We put a massive amount of effort into various recruitment campaigns, events and family occasions as well as driving a successful engageme nt with the local schools to ensure rugby is at the top of everyone’s agenda.” Community “We are absolutely a community club. You just need to look at how the 3G all-weather, floodlit facility has come into being to see that. We joined forces with the local football club (Strathaven Dynamos) to attract the necessary level of funding and to provide a joint facility that we both share with the wider community and school. A true community club with a clear community ethos.” 3G Pitch
