RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

T

hese days the biggest topic of discussion in Cullompton Rugby Club is promotion . To try or not to try , that is the question ; to remain a third season in Western Counties West with its cosy , lucrative local derbies and keep winning or return to South West One West , tougher competition , long trips to Gloucester and a big step for the teenage players .
Anyone sitting in on the last Cullompton players committee meeting is soon left in no doubt as to the players ’ opinion . Playing Chairman , manager of the first and second teams and fierce competitor , Steve Luxon , starts proceedings . “ We ’ re lying second with crucial games against the first and third placed teams in the next two weeks . We have the team and the morale to win them and the league but need to front up a little better than we did against Wellington last Saturday but at least we ’ re in the habit of winning this year !”
Come Sunday morning with Devonport Services vanquished and Cullompton at the top of the table the fight is on with Exeter University and Truro making it a four way scrap that will go to the wire . It is the 125th anniversary year with all new kit and merchandise and numerous events planned including a Grand Dinner Dance but playing captain , Sam Harris , is determined that the biggest event will be promotion in this his retirement season ( the third one ).
Promotion is underwritten by a healthy supply of young players feeding through from the three hundred strong colts and junior section , the fruit of over twenty years work . Their quality is endorsed by senior coaches Will Chudley and Harry Williams , local celebrity premiership players , who inspire the older age groups with monthly coaching sessions .
At the outset of league Rugby when Cullompton plied their trade in Devon Two there was a joke that Cully was a fine club and all they needed was a team . This was only true for a short while but successive generations of committees have left the club with the fine legacy of a level pitch , spacious clubhouse with function rooms and lounge bar , catering standard kitchen and the grandstand block with modern changing rooms . These priceless facilities are not only enjoyed by visitors and club members alike but are the engine that generates the club income , hosting weddings , funerals , conferences , meetings and league darts and skittles .
