COM COPYRIGHT 2013 GARTH BAKERY LTD | WEBSITE BY CURZON CREATIVE present and in the near future hope to keep these players in the sport and playing for Abercwmboi RFC and to continue climbing up through the leagues .
However , anyone who moves to play at a higher level does so with our best wishes , as long as they are playing regularly . Abercwmboi has benefitted from this over the last three or four seasons , as a few players who have played regularly in the higher leagues have returned to us as better players .
Although we are a relatively young club , we have produced a number of players who have gone on to greater things . The most notable of these being the Wales and British Lions second row , Ian Evans , along with Wales Youth captain and current Pontypridd captain Dafydd Lockyear .
Our first representative honour however came in the mid 1990 ’ s when scrum half Mark Rees was capped for the Wels Districts team . A number of our players , including Steven Jones and David Barry , have gained Welsh age grade caps whilst others have played in the top divisions .
Abercwmboi RFC is very much a community club with rugby for all ages . We also have lots of other organisations making use of our 3G training area in addition to hosting school matches and age group regional matches . The clubhouse is used by many local organisations for meetings and functions . The local road-running club meet here twice a week and part of the building houses a gym which members of the public are able to join .
Alun James of Abercwmboi Rugby Club recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his positive association with the club , saying , “ I am a Mountain Ash boy , playing most of my rugby at school and a few seasons at the club for the 2nds as their scrum half or on the wing .
Abercwmboi are a very young club with a young side and I ’ m sure if we can hold onto our players for the next three seasons we will only become stronger and stronger as our youth players come through .
At the moment our confidence is very high , sitting 3rd in our league on the back of last season ’ s promotion and a great match in the silver bowl when we won 144 nil in one of our fixtures , scoring 23 tries , a new club record . We are all very proud of our club at Abercwmboi and I would like to wish everyone at our club continued success !”
