Abercwmboi
We still play on the old Miners ’ Welfare ground , which we bought outright in 1988 , though over the past eight years it has changed out of all recognition with us having a purpose built clubhouse adjacent to the fields .
The general mood in Abercwmboi RFC is at present quite positive as the first team are having some success on the field . We were second in our league last season and gained promotion to East Central 3A , and this season we are currently in third place but with the two teams above us still to come to our patch .
The players , and supporters , are enjoying the open brand of rugby that the senior coaches Nick James and Geraint Cutlan are encouraging them to play . As a result of this “ heads-up ” rugby we are scoring lots of tries and last season were the second highest try-scorers in Wales behind only Merthyr . We have it written in to our club constitution that we will never pay players and this helps the community feeling amongst the players .
We have some very promising players coming through our junior section at

Steve Young is the former president of Abercwmboi Rugby Club . He recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his many happy years associated with the club , saying , “ Twelve or so years ago , a colleague of mine who was a club member asked me if I would be interested in sponsoring the club with my business M & M Medical Ltd and I jumped at the chance .”
“ To be honest I was looking to support a local community club and was very impressed by the work the club were doing within the local area . This transpired into me becoming club president for the past seven years but unfortunately due to work commitments I have had to step down . Abercwmboi is a very well organised and run club and I would like to wish everyone down there the very best of success for the future . I will continue to give my support to the club and visit as often as I can .”
