Abercwmboi RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

A

bercwmboi RFC stated off in the 1970s as “ The Kings Head ” pub team , playing other pub teams on Sunday mornings . We became a “ Junior Union ” or “ District ” WRU club at the start of the 1980 / 81 season , playing on an old Miners ’ welfare ground against other Junior clubs or second teams of Senior WRU clubs .
On gaining our official status , the nucleus of players from the pub team were soon joined by players from other clubs and people who had not played since their school days and we were soon running three senior sides . Through those early years Abercwmboi RFC had far more successes than failures and , after only 18 years , at the start of the 1998 / 99 season , we became a full WRU club .
Abercwmboi has always been a very social club , welcoming players of all abilities . As one of our founder members used to say “ If you pull on our shirt , you ’ re good enough for us ” and whilst we are hungry for success , this is very much still the ethos of the club .
Our mini / Junior section is currently strong with teams from Under 7s through to Youth ( Under 19s ) and we have just started a “ Rugby Tots ” club . We run two senior teams , however , as with most clubs it is becoming more and more difficult to run a second team and this is something that urgently needs to be looked at by the WRU .
Over the years a number of Youth players have , in their final season of Youth rugby , played in the senior teams when required . This helps with the transition to senior rugby , though whenever one of the teams does not play ( Youth , Firsts or Seconds ) the players always support the other teams and all players socialise together post-match in the clubhouse .
