to the field at all levels , watching youngsters develop through our youth sections to the senior teams to name but a few .
The club is currently in a good place . Despite not having a head coach this season we are lying fourth in the league with a chance of finishing third or even , with a lot of luck , runners up . This is in no small part down to the efforts of club captain Barry Crookston , vice-captain Ross Hutchison and 1st XV Manager Sheila Beare .
Our second string , affectionately known as the Devs ( Development XV ), have fulfilled virtually every fixture , which is not the case for a number of other clubs at our level or even above . While numbers at under 14 and under 18 are disappointing , our under 16 and younger teams are in a healthy position in terms of ability , numbers and volunteers to assist with the teams .
We have invested heavily in building on our relations with local schools as the future of the senior teams depends on a continued through flow from youth levels . This Saturday ’ s 19 man 1st XV squad includes at least 15 who began their rugby careers in our youth section .
Our under 18 ’ s are encouraged to train with the seniors for non-contact sessions so that when they do move up they know the guys who will be their team mates . Normally their early experience of senior rugby is in the Devs though there are occasionally precocious players who step up to first XV almost immediately .
There are a number of challenges facing the club in the next 5 years . First and foremost is to support rugby at our local secondary schools so as to build up our player base . Sourcing funding is always a challenge and we have lost a couple of sponsors with the downturn in the oil industry . Our facilities are showing signs of age and will need to be upgraded or replaced requiring yet more funding , planning and overseeing the work undertaken .
Early in this piece , I said that the most challenging aspect of my role is to find volunteers to take part in running the club and it will continue to be a challenge to replace current committee members and others as they retire , move or cease to be involved in the club for whatever reason , as it is for all clubs our size .
I am confident that the club is in a good enough position to rise to these challenges . I expect my vice president Tracy Gray to become our first lady president in May and hope she relishes her term of office as much as I have .
After 3 years near the top of our league , I expect our 1st XV to gain promotion and consolidate our position in the league above , our Devs to improve , an occasional 3rd XV or Golden Oldies team to have fixtures , numbers at under 18 , midi , mini and micro to continue to grow and that GRFC continues to be a community club , possibly pre-eminent in Fife .
