almouth RFC currently competes in the Tribute Cornwall/Devon South West
Division and have made a terrific start to their league campaign to top the
standings. We recently caught up with their Chairman James Instance to gain an insight
into their success.

insight into their success.
He told us, “The general mood at
Falmouth is incredibly positive; the 1st
XV are enjoying the best start to a season
in years, with a 6 match winning streak
to start off the season and currently sit
at the top of the Devon and Cornwall
league. The influx of players into the
squad means that we will be able to fulfil
a few more 2nd team matches than we
originally envisaged and we are fielding
junior teams in every age group.”
“There were no specific targets set
for the first team for the start of the
32 Issue 67
season, or indeed a target for the end
of the season, other than to improve on
last year’s finish. The team won their
first three matches but they were against
teams who now sit towards the bottom
of the table, so it was difficult to tell what
real potential the side has.
“However in October we faced local
derbies against Penryn and Penzance
who both have ambitions to rise through
the league and won both matches, so
there is now some excitement building.
We realise that these are early days and
there are many tough tests remaining but
it’s been a tremendous start.
“The coaching staff of Graham
Whitmore and Chris Morgan, Captain
of Championship side Cornish Pirates,
are introducing a mind-set to the players
where they have to relish the defensive
