the best he can be. It is a cliché but we DO take one
game at a time. Right now our aim is to finish closer
to the top than we did last season.
“We have a very strong Mini and Youth rugby
set up. Marlow is the home of Mini Rugby in
England. We are looking at developing a love of the
game which translates into generating future adult
players for Marlow RUFC. We’ve also produced a
few professionals such as Matt Dawson and Henry
Taylor.
“Our Academy system is very important. Each
year we prepare our Colts for the Adult game
and seek to give them the right opportunities and
experience. The Academy system takes age grade
players and gives them specialist coaching for the
transition. It’s great to see our Colts running out for
our senior sides.
“We are absolutely a community club. We
are fortunate to have really great facilities which
we own. However, there are always areas we are
looking to improve and seeking to invest in.
“There are lots of challenges facing amateur
clubs; player numbers, player availability and
facility running costs are a daily challenge. Players’
expectations in relation to facilities and services
are rightly increasing but the percolation of semiprofessionalism through the community game risks
the erosion of some traditional values of club rugby
- volunteering, club loyalty and the sustainment of
quality facilities. One of our greatest challenges is
keeping young players participating in club rugby
after university. It is our aim to be playing at the
highest level attainable for an amateur club.”
