Egremont Egremont RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB E gremont RUFC is a terrific example of what a well-run club can achieve with success both on and off the field. We recently caught up with their Director of Rugby Huw Lewis to find out more about the good work that they have been doing lately. Atmosphere He told us, “Overall, the atmosphere at the club is very good. We have a large number of committed members, both on and off the field, who work very hard to ensure the continued success of the club. We do, however, face a lot of competition for players as West Cumbria has a relatively large number of rugby clubs, both league and union, who all draw from a finite pool of players. Many enjoy both codes as all year round rugby players and, by and large, this system works well although selection does become difficult at second team level during the crossover months of September and March in particular. This does not affect the first team.” Success “We have a strong coaching team at the club, all of whom were already club members when they took on their roles. We no longer bring in outside coaches without a connection to Egremont, preferring to use the considerable expertise of our existing talent. This generates very good team spirit amongst the players, many of whom started playing their rugby aged six in the thriving Egremont junior section. We also try to run our completely amateur club in as professional a manner as possible by providing strong team management, as well as top quality physio and administrative support. In addition, we are fortunate to be supported by strong and generous club and match sponsors, James Fisher Nuclear Ltd and Robinsons www.sportip.biz 49
