FUNERAL DIRECTORS
OUR YEARS OF SERVICE WILL SERVE YOU WELL
The preseason training sessions have gone very well and attendances have generally been good , with the lads thoroughly enjoying the different sessions and ideas John and his Assistant Coach Iain Menzies have brought , including a hard but fun session on the beach .
Off the pitch we ’ ve been working hard to get the extension complete , the club tidy , and ready for the new season , and importantly the official opening with the MP Ian Lavery and our successful Sportsman ’ s Dinner with John Bentley as the main speaker which was held September 2nd and attended by 177 people .”
2016-17
“ After struggling over the last two seasons , this season we are looking to consolidate our first team league position , and aim to be comfortable mid table and then look to push for promotion after that .
We currently only regularly run two adult sides on a Saturday and our aim is to get a third team out on a more regular basis .
The first XV have had a fairly positive start , beating local rivals Blyth in the Northumberland County Cup , and have had two comfortable league wins , one a stunning 55-25 win at Seaton Carew and have narrowly lost four league games so far .
The seconds are currently top of their league and we are just a few players short of a third team and our target is to encourage more “ vets ” and ex-players back into the game at a social third team level .”

Youth
“ We ’ ve participated in the RFU “ All Schools programme ” for several years but we ’ ve struggled to bridge the gap between schools and the club . There ’ s tremendous enthusiasm and positive feedback for our coaches in the schools and Craig Walton our main schools coach has a good rapport with the school kids , but we struggle to get them to come to train at the club , so we ’ ve been talking to the participating schools about how we change that and the schools have agreed to more sessions being held at the club during the season . This remains predominantly a football playing area so we ’ re having to compete against that and the many other options young people have .
We currently have U16 that we combine with Blyth and U14 that we combine with Alnwick . Our target area for all schools this year is U12 to continue the progress . We are also working with the RFU to enhance colts numbers at U17-18 .
As said earlier , we ’ ve also launched our tots and junior Sunday morning sessions , to try and get them early and it ’ s great to see young boys and girls between the ages of four and nine running around enjoying themselves on a Sunday morning . They are our future senior teams and the future of the club . It ’ s also great to see so many parents new to the club coming and watching their kids enjoying themselves and supporting the club by buying coffees , snacks and bacon sandwiches on a Sunday morning .”
Integration
“ We have a very young first team , with nearly all of our players coming through our junior set up and the local schools . Our older boys train on a Thursday before the seniors so get used to being around them , and they ’ re encouraged to stay and watch . We don ’ t have a full colts side , so once the youngsters reach seventeen they ’ re encouraged to join in with the Seniors . Because our first team is so young the integration is relatively easy .”
Community
“ Our club is very much a community club . We run adult and junior rugby , we have two Saturday cricket teams playing in the Northumberland leagues , we are the home of Ellington Juniors Football Club , Northumberland Lightning American Football Club , Green Lane Able Bodied and Disable Bodied Archery Club and Northumberland Veterans Motorcycle Club .
