Pulborough Pulborough RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB P ulborough RFC is a terrific example of the important role that a club can play in a local community, providing people with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment. First XV Captain Simon Burfiend recently took the time to speak to us ahead of the new season. Involvement He told us, “I have been involved at the club since the age of 12, making my way through the age groups and the senior sides to my current role as 1st XV captain. I was first taken along to the club by my parents, and haven’t looked back since. The most challenging aspect more often than not comes down to inconsistency with selection. In part being due to a fair bit of travel and injuries. However this does lead to opportunities which are the most rewarding thing to see; allowing the younger developing players to have the opportunity to play 1st XV rugby, and it is always a fantastic moment when a Colt steps up and begins pushing for a starting spot.” Atmosphere “The club is in a fantastic place at the moment. With arguably some of the best playing facilities in Sussex, a thriving mini and junior section, and most importantly the girls section with the U18s girls recently being crowned National Champions. Despite the large numbers in different sections of the club we have very much remained as a whole group, stemming right down from the 1st XV to the minis.” 2015/16 “The 1st XV secured their highest league position, as a result of a 81st minute try in the last game of the season. The same can be said for the seconds and thirds who after being promoted have proven themselves in their current leagues. The greatest achievement of the season however has to be the U18 girls who are the top side in the country after winning the national champs.” The majority of our success has come since moving clubhouse and pitches. Since this time all sections of the club have gone from strength to strength with an incredible atmosphere surrounding Freelands on a Saturday and Sunday which attracts more quality players to the club each season.” www.sportip.biz 51
