alne RFC suffered the disappointment of relegation in the
2014/15 season but bounced back last time around, claiming
a second place finish in the league. They are now looking forward to
the new campaign with plenty of optimism and we recently caught
up with Chairman Chris Austin to find out more.
Involvement
He told us, “I moved to Calne 11
years ago and before I moved I decided
I should look to join a local rugby club.
I had only ever played rugby at school
level but Calne welcomed me into the
club and the rest is history.
I have held most roles within Calne
Rugby and re-launched the junior
section. I am now the Chairman and
the most challenging part of this role is
spinning plates! There is always so much
to do from marketing to pitch marking

on match days, it is pretty constant.
However, when you see players smiling
and enjoying rugby both at junior and
senior level, it reminds me why I do it!”
Atmosphere
“The 2014-15 season was a challenge.
We were relegated, training numbers
were down to around 4-6 people, a
number of regular players left and we
lost our 2nd XV. But this season has seen
a major upturn both on and off the field.
I secured a match shirt sponsor ‘Bevirs
Solictors’ and the Calne Lions Club
sponsored our post protectors and flags
and had a good unbeaten run towards
