He recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his positive association with Canvey Island RFC, saying “I came to the game late and had never previously played a game of rugby before 2009. “My partner lived close to the club and I went along and started playing, the rest is history as they say. I have played in a number of positions including winger and 2nd row although my favourite position is flanker. Unfortunately a knee injury resulting in cartilage damage has hindered my playing career since March this year, however with my operation pending I hope to return as soon as I can. “Coach Daniel Horton has been an inspiration to me and many others at the club and I feel I owe a lot to the game of rugby itself as well as Canvey Island RFC which has included me and helped me make great progress personally. “My business Vauxhall Spares & Repairs is a current club sponsor and has been for a few years now. Canvey Island RFC is very important to me and I recently had a very enjoyable engagement party with an outside marquee at the club. My now fiancée Louise Parsons, myself and everyone in attendance had a wonderful day. “This was helped in many ways by my many friends at the rugby club who were more than helpful on the day, arriving early and assisting with setting things up. I would like to say thank you to everyone at the club for their support and wish them all all the very best for the future.” Unit 7-11 Charfleets Road, Canvey Island, Essex SS8 0PQ He told us, “At this time the club is in an optimistic mood, after a period of some bad results on the pitch and off pitch worries that have been resolved and the buzz is back. We are looking forward to the new season. “We have had a trying season playing wise with a couple of players leaving to play a higher standard of rugby at the start of the campaign and a horrendous injury count, two players having to retire through injury and with countless small injuries the teams have not once gone out with the same team throughout the season. On occasions we have had to call off the 2nd team fixture to fulfil or league commitment. “The youth rugby within the club is very important to us and we realise that they are the future of the club. We try to make the step up from youth to senior a smooth as possible. We have and will always try to mix youth with older ex first team players so they are protected and learn the game. “We are a community and family minded club; living on an Island approximately 3 miles by 7 miles makes it easier to be so. We host charity events and both the gun club and the fishing club use our clubhouse for monthly meetings. “Having built the clubhouse ourselves in 1982-3 on land leased from the Council, this year we successfully negotiated to buy the freehold.
