Combe Down
Gumshields - Off the shelf vs . custom made
The humble gum shield is the most important piece of equipment that you , as a rugby player , owns . They protect your teeth and gums and can help to reduce potential jaw injuries . Gum shields should be moulded for a snug fit around the top teeth , and the best way to achieve this is with a custom one made by your dentist . Dentists take an impression of your teeth which is then used to make the gum shield . Your dentist can also make small adjustments if required . There are ‘ own impression taking kits ’ available , a step up from the boil in the bag but these aren ’ t guaranteed to give a good result as the end product is only as good as the person taking the impression ! Off the shelf versions are generally either premoulded or heated at home to self mould . Gum shields that fit well provide the best level of protection whilst also making communication easier . You can ’ t grow any more nashers so protect them well !
I was born , quite literally born to be a dentist . My grandfather was a dentist and my father Richard practised here in Bath for over 30 years . I now serve the local community from the same practice where , as a boy I used to do my homework after school !
We have treated over 1500 patients in Widcombe . You can trust us with your teeth .

Youth
“ Youth Rugby is an integral part of the club , without it there is no future ! The guys running the mini and junior sections are doing a fantastic job and with the help of the volunteers they have it makes for a great environment for the kids to play and enjoy rugby .
Steve Cottle and his coaches with the minis and Adie Sprake and his team with the juniors all deserve a huge thank you . We are currently rebranding the mini and junior section to be Combe Down Gladiators and Combe Down Spartans respectively . I think it makes it more of a fun environment for the kids and a nice progression through the different stages of their rugby careers at the club .”
Integration
“ We have been looking at how to improve integration into senior rugby this season , with a view to building in some more steps to make the transition as smooth as possible . We train on the same night as the U13s and U15s so they get to see what our sessions look like . One thing we would like next season is more senior player involvement in the junior and mini coaching , or just watching and engaging with the players on a Sunday morning .”
Community
“ Combe Down is a thriving community and the Rugby Club is at the heart of it . There is a development of 700 new homes being built right next door to the club , so we hope we will see our player and supporter numbers go up in the coming years .”
Challenges
“ We have a great young squad , but there are a few key positions where we have players coming to the end of their playing days and we need to attract new players to the club . That goes for the mini and junior sections of the club as well . We are also losing our club physio which will have a big impact so we need to fill that void .”
Ambitions
“ I would like to see the 1st XV consolidate a place in our new league . The club would also like to increase its network of sponsors and a new clubhouse is being talked about . We would also like to increase our leisurewear range with the help of our supplier CS Printing .”
