RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
C
ombe Down RFC has
enjoyed
a
season
to
remember this time around
which culminated in them being
crowned Champions of Dorset and Wilts
1 North. We recently caught up with
Club Captain Steve Pearce to gain an
insight into what has been behind their
success.
Involvement
He told us, “I’ve been at the club for
four years after playing most of my adult
rugby for our oldest rivals across town!
I moved away from Bath for a couple of
years and when I came back I was either
going to go back to my old club or come to
Combe Down. I went up to watch a game
and the club were so welcoming I made
my mind up to join! It was the welcoming,
90 Issue 63
family club and traditional values that I
liked about Combe Down RFC.”
The Role
“In terms of challenges, it’s a busy
club with lots going on and we could
always do with a few extra volunteers to
spread the jobs out. I also find bridging
the gap between young and old players
challenging but rewarding at the same
time. I’m 37 now and it’s a different
attitude towards the game with today’s
younger players.
It’s also a different vocabulary – Karl
Gordon told me the food after a game
once was ‘on fleek’ – I had to Google it to
see what he meant! It’s also rewarding to
be involved in a club that has traditional
rugby values and a great group of players
and supporters.”
Present
“The club is buzzing at the moment,
we have been all year. We set our
objectives at the start of the season for the
1st XV to win the league and the 2nd XV
to consolidate after being promoted the
season before – both achieved!
It’s gone really well – the 1st XV won
the league with 3 games to spare and
the 2nd XV exceeded expectations and
guaranteed a top four finish with a couple
of games to spare.”
Success
“I think the commitment from the
players and the support of the committee
has been a huge factor in the season we’ve
had. When I sat down with the Chairman
Paul Ashman at the end of last season we
