This ethos , of as many players as possible turning up and enjoying rugby on a Saturday , as well as the postmatch hospitality , has seen a vibrant off-field social scene emerge . Whether that ’ s in the recently renovated clubhouse at Wootton Recreation Ground , or out and about in Cowes , particularly in the Anchor pub , who has just been announced as a new sponsor of the club .
With a range of sponsors helping drive the club forward , the players can look forward to new playing shirts for the upcoming season . This particularly excited former player , and representative of the club ’ s main sponsor Rouse Intelligent Finance Ltd , Andy White , who said , “ While a few of us former players might not squeeze into a new playing shirt , I ’ m sure the lads will pull the jersey on with pride ”.
The view that this is a season of potential is shared by Head Coach , Dave Metcalfe , who welcomed the club ’ s role in the community and close relationship with Vectis RFC , the home of youth rugby on the Island . “ We ’ re well placed , and raring to go ,” Dave enthused , “ on and off the pitch we are looking in good shape and I know we are all looking forward to the 2016 / 17 season kicking off especially as , for the first time as far as I am aware , we are in the same league as local rivals Sandown & Shanklin and Ventnor ”.
Chairman Ollie Boulter agreed , “ We ’ ve got a social summer coming up , with a range of events in the community , a golf day and the usual social ‘ Black Wednesday ’ held every Cowes Week – and that ’ s before I even remind everyone that pre-season has already begun . As a chairman who is also playing ( just !) I am personally looking forward very much to all of this , and reminding everyone of one of our favourite sayings in the club – Saturday is rugby day !”
