Approach
“We are a very small club, with
no revenue stream other than the
membership and subs that the lads pay.
We don’t have a club house, our Club base
is a local pub, The Plough, who provide
food for both teams in return for a good
spend at the bar which is not a problem!
With very limited resources, we only
run one team, with the occasional Vets/
development side turning out once in a
while. We have a good relationship with
the local school but can’t provide the
coaching that bigger clubs close to us can.
We rely on word of mouth and a
‘bring a mate’ strategy to keep bringing
new players to the club.”
Community
“We are 100% a community
establishment. The Club was founded as a
local colliery team and as such generations
of the same families have, and in some
cases, still play together. Our current 1st
team has a father and son Eric Cranmer
(11), Jack Cranmer (9). Eric continues to
defy age, pushing 50, he continues to lead
76 Issue 63
the try scoring tables which being honest,
is the silverware he really wants!
We have two sets of brothers as well,
Alex Berry (8, Captain) Isaac Berry (7) and
their dad, Jud Berry is 1st Team Manager
and Josh Metcalfe (10) and Ellis Metcalfe
(3). We have a minibus that we are always
willing to let local schools or groups use
when they need to as well.”
Challenges/Ambition
“Our biggest challenge is finding
front row players! It’s still a challenge
to find young front row players,
but as our younger players
develop physically, they are
more confident to give it a go!
Finances
are
another
challenge for us … we need
to continue to look at ways
of raising funds to help with
maintaining our pitch which
is becoming increasingly
uneven, kit needs, equipment
etc.
Recruitment will continue
to be a focus to ensure the next
generation of players develop and
help attract more players.
Promotion brings the challenge of
going to clubs we’re not familiar with
and playing at a higher level. Keeping
this squad together is the main ambition
of our Club. We also intend to have some
members take coaching courses at various
levels in order to look at developing a
Junior set up to help the club to progress.”
