RUGBY CLUB

It is an exciting time for everyone involved with Harlow Rugby Club at the moment as they prepare for their move to a new ground . We caught up with their Secretary Ken Porter to find out more about the club .

Involvement
He started by telling us about his involvement with the club saying , “ I have been involved with Harlow RFC for over 15 years after moving to the town . As is often the case , my involvement started with bringing my son down to play in the Mini ’ s and not long after being ‘ volunteered ’ for various roles . In this period , I have managed youth teams , been in charge of kit laundry , acting Youth Chair , Membership Secretary , Club Volunteer Co-ordinator etc . before becoming Club Secretary 5 years ago .”
The Role
“ By far the most challenging aspect of my current role of Club Secretary is trying to keep us ‘ legal ’ amidst a seemingly increasing sea of bureaucracy , regulatory compliance , licencing issues etc . but we are very fortunate in receiving a great deal of support from our Constituent Body , Essex County , and the RFU regional development officers . There is an increasing need for clubs such as ours to adopt sustainable models while providing adequate facilities for our members and the wider community - this , of course , adds to the workload .
In terms of reward , it is a source of great pride to us that we field teams from Under 7 ’ s all the way through the Mini and Youth age groups to Vets , including 3 Senior Men ’ s teams as well as a Ladies and two Girls squads . Our Mini Section , in particular , is thriving thanks to extremely focused and enthusiastic management and coaches .”
Atmosphere
“ This is a very exciting time for the Club as we look forward to moving to brand new , state-ofthe-art facilities in the near future . Our current Clubhouse and facilities , where we have been since 1955 , are no longer suitable for a thriving cub with ambitions to grow even bigger and stronger . There is a very strong belief and commitment that the new Club and its facilities will enable us to move forward to the next stage of our development .”
