Success on the pitch has been supported by a superb, inclusive approach behind the scenes and we caught up with Club Representative Simon Wallis to find out how this has been achieved. Involvement Atmosphere Community He told us, “I’ve been involved for around fifteen years now. Twenty years ago we had four senior sides and no youth set up. Seven or eight years ago we had no senior sides and 550 kids playing here from U5 to U18. Now, we have a similar number of kids up to U21s as well as two senior sides that are both sitting at the top of their respective leagues.” “The atmosphere at the club is very positive. Don’t get me wrong, we have our problems as with any grassroots club; we could always do with a bit more cash and are always on the lookout for more coaches but when y o u ’ v e considered w h e r e we’ve been and where we now the progress is incredible. We made the investment to develop our youth section and that is paying dividends.” “We became a Community Amateur Sports Club (CASC) two or three years ago and that was a big statement for us. There used to be two or three of us that ran the whole club but because of the success we’ve achieved the structure has been improved. We now have formal committees in place to deal with the growth of the club and the progress that we’ve made. We’re trying to create a family atmosphere so that everyone visiting us can enjoy what we have to offer.” Player Pathway “The whole club is about the player pathway. It is about making sure that we are offering any child the opportunity to play our sport at the level that suits them. We just want them to be taught the skills as well as we possibly can train them whilst offering them competitive rugby as and when they need it. I love the youth development that we have here and the life lessons that the sport is able to offer. There is a real family feel here – we play to
