“One of the biggest challenges; as with any club
the size of Old G’s, is player recruitment. Whilst
naturally looking for players to strengthen the 1st
team, the club constantly looks to attract new
players of any standard.”
of the league the mood is positive with
a number of new players having been
introduced to senior rugby in the past year
by the coaching set up. The mood in the
lower sides is also good with the senior
players in these sides supporting and
developing talent of the future as players
take their first steps into the senior section.
The lower sides are always competitive
with a mixture of old wise heads and
upcoming youngsters contributing to
numerous victories.
The plan for the rest of the season is for
the first team to keep battling for points
to stay in Kent 1, keep improving the
standard of performances and for young
players to continue to develop as part of
the senior squad in preparation for future
success. The 3rd team and vets continue
to perform well and both will be hopeful
of competing for end of season honours.
Whilst youth rugby has always been
important to the club, over the close
season efforts will be made to introduce
lower age groups to ensure the flow of
62 Issue 61
players into the club does not
halt as currently there is only an
under 17/18 side.
One of the biggest challenges; as with
any club the size of Old G’s, is player
recruitment. Whilst naturally
looking for players to
strengthen the 1st team,
the club constantly
looks to attract
new players of
any standard and
can provide a
good rugby offer
for a variety of
player abilities
and experience.
The club will
be on a big
recruitment
drive
in
summer
2016
and will welcome any
new players with open
arms, whatever standard and
playing history. The club values itself on
providing good rugby alongside good
social opportunities, essentially what
community rugby is all about.
Ambitions for the next 5 years include
the improvement of the club’s facilities,
increasing the player base at the club and
building a cohesive squad of talented
players that can compete in the Kent
leagues and look to push for
promotion to the London
leagues.
Whilst the club
is struggling for
league
position
currently, plans
are in place to
recruit
further
players and to
develop
the
existing
talent
to improve the
overall quality of
the squad. This is not
an overnight process
and the club will look
to develop in the upcoming
years to strengthen not only the
first team but all aspects of the club.
