Annan Rugby Club firmly supports
a number of community initiatives and
programmes that enhance levels of
physical activity and wellbeing, as well
as adding to community cohesion. In
September the Club supported “Day of
the Region” in Annan where coaches
delivered fun and free sessions of tag
rugby to children and adults. Day of the
Region is a programme that is designed
to engage with local organisations to
promote the many services the town
has to offer, bringing together the local
community and visitors and for the good
of the local economy.
Annan Rugby Club was also a partner
organisation in the local government
funded “Beat the Streets” initiative that
captured the imagination of Annan
town’s population. Simple swipe boxes
were placed on lampposts throughout
the town, encouraging people to walk or
cycle and swipe their card, gaining them
points for their chosen organisation/
charity. The organisation/charity with
the combined most points when the
programme finished won a financial
prize. The initiative was a resounding
success, with an increased number of
people walking or cycling to school and
work.
In September 2015, Annan RFC was
awarded the BT Club of the month by
the SRU for its ongoing development,
thus qualifying for Club of the Year
consideration later this year. The Club
Kenny Carlyle is a long standing club sponsor of Annan
Rugby Club. He recently told Rugby Club Magazine, “I
used to play rugby myself many years ago in the position
of hooker however my association with Annan RFC was
cemented with my son Adam playing junior rugby. Adam
is now 25 and due to working away Monday to Friday
doesn’t get much of an opportunity to play and the arrival
of my granddaughter Ezme has also played its part. Adam’s
main playing position is on the wing and although he can’t
play as he would have done normally he still pops into the
club most weekends when he’s home. Annan RFC is a
great community club and I would like to wish everyone
associated with the club continued success!”
