Orpington work days and fundraising events. We redecorated the changing rooms and put the onus on the players to take pride in their club again and they’ve taken that message on wholeheartedly.” This Season “By any measure, the season has been successful so far – even more so when you consider where we were last year. We are sitting third in Kent 2 and have only lost twice in 16 games. One of the new recruits, Luke Cooper, has already broken the club’s record for 1st XV tries in a season (currently he’s on 29!) so we’re obviously playing an exciting brand of rugby that’s bringing results. Our plan for the rest of the campaign is to try to push on for promotion. We’ve had a few injury problems recently with our captain, Roy Benyon, ruled out for the season but last year’s skipper, Charlie Warner, has stepped in and we are continuing to improve the strength and depth of the squad. We’ve got some difficult games coming up but the squad is training well and the team is nowhere near its full potential yet.” Youth “Youth rugby is vital in securing the long-term future of the club. We re-established our youth section last season and numbers continue to grow. We encourage interaction between the junior and senior sections of the club. Senior players are involved with coaching the youth on Sundays and the youngsters have acted as mascots for the 1st XV. One of the reasons it is so vital to re-establish our 2nd XV is to provide a suitable bridge between junior and senior rugby for players making that transition – as well as providing a place for the older players to continue playing and passing on their wisdom to the next generation once their days in the 1st XV are over.” Vehicle Services LTD Family run, independent garage in Sidcup, London Established 35 years ago, B.J. We don’t want to get away from the ethos of the club that emphasises the social aspects of the game – we want to use that as a springboard to success on the field. We want to establish ourselves as a Kent 1 side and push on from there. It’s not unrealistic for us to be looking for promotion to the London Leagues if we recruit well and bring through some of the talented youth players we have over the next few years. We want to see the youth section grow to cover more age groups and we want to see more players making that transition from junior to senior rugby.” www.sportip.biz 35
