Blaenavon FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG for the club was providing international scrum-halves at school boy, youth and senior levels all in the same season, something that will probably never happen again. “Over the years the club has ran its own carnivals, concerts, social events and many other events involving other sports. “One of the down sides for me is that we have been unable to continue running our youth side because of a lack of numbers. I believe this has come about because the schools in the area no longer focus on rugby as the main sport. “As previously mentioned, our club is community focused and we are at present expanding our activities to engage more of the locals. This has been enhanced by the on-going success of our senior side. With promotions from past seasons we are now playing in the First Division East of the Welsh Leagues. “Over the next five years we will not rest on our laurels as we strive forward, not only on the rugby front but also on a much forgotten issue, that of recruiting committee and volunteers. For without these people supporting the sport there will be many clubs struggling to continue. But for the moment we are pushing ahead to make the club a happy and successful place to be around.” There is much to admire about the set up that Blaenavon RFC currently has Alwyn Hurcombe of club sponsor H & H Engineering recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine. He said, “I am a Blaenavon boy and played seven seasons for the club as outside half from 1970-78. I did also return to the club after a spell at Pontypool and eventually hung up my boots at the ripe old age of 47 having broken 3 ribs, I thought then that enough was enough. My business, H&H Engineering, has sponsored the club for many years and although I don’t get down to see the boys due to business commitments I always wish them the very best and hope they enjoy continued success.” 8 Issue 61 in place.
