RUGBY CLUB
S
cunthorpe Rugby Club has
been enjoying a fine campaign
this time around with their first
team going well in the league. President
Steve Williams took the time to give us
an insight into what has been behind
their success.
Involvement
He told us, “I first became involved
with Scunthorpe Rugby Club as young
14 year old in the early 70s. We had
no such thing as mini or junior rugby
– all we had was a colts (U19) team.
My teacher and rugby coach Tony
Barry was a player at the club and he
suggested a few of us went along to see if
we could get more regular rugby. A few
of us played with lads well over our age.
At that time the Colts played many
men’s teams such as a vets or a fourth
team so we got a tough introduction to
the game. It did not do us any harm as it
prepared us for senior rugby. In fact so
much so that I made my 1st team debut
in November 1973 at the age of 16 playing
alongside Mike Lampowski who went
on to play for England a couple of years
later. Apart from a four year break when
I moved jobs and played for Goole RUFC
I have been involved for well over forty
years.”
The Role
“As President, the role
is very much about the
public face of the
club. So I represent
the club across
all
aspects
– particularly at 1st team games and
on match day. This allows me to meet
and socialise with our oppositions’
