Stourbridge
Atmosphere
“We are buoyant that our new first team squad has
settled down well and is playing some good quality
rugby. Moreover there is an enthusiasm and a
drive that had been lacking last year and there
are signs of more coordinated coaching across
the year groups and the social sides.
As this is our 50th Anniversary at our
current ground (Stourton Park) we are
able to celebrate the fact and this attracts
local attention and revives many old
contacts that may have drifted in recent
years. It is important for us to recognize
their pioneering efforts and to enjoy
their company again. At a recent explayers lunch I was delighted to be able to
welcome our 98 year old former President
Robbie Robertson, a great personal friend
and character.”
This Season
“The off season was a transitional period for
us. Whilst the former regime was in control of the
club until the end of July (at the AGM) there was
an unprecedented vote which polarized opinions and
caused some friction between members with differing
opinions. The turbulence of change is still evident although
the incoming committee have since settled into their roles it is
clear that there are still isolated pockets of discontent.
Adrian Bressington, the owner of AB Family Law
recently spoke to Rugby Club Magazine about his
positive association with Stourbridge Rugby Club,
saying, “Although my main sport was cricket I have
developed a keenness and a great enjoyment of rugby.
We have a strong family connection with Stourbridge
which started with my son Alastair who scored over
1000 points as their full back and kicker. Alastair was
also a pro cricketer before coming to rugby union
having taken to the fields at Gloucester. His brother
Nathan, who still plays on the wing for Stourbridge
having come from Moseley RFC, did things the other
way round from rugby to county cricket. Nathan has
also enjoyed many successes at the club as a record try
scorer.
It has been a busy and exciting time for our family
with my daughter Lydia getting married recently and
the arrival of Nathan’s son Wilbur our first grandchild.
Stourbridge RFC are a very family orientated club and I
attend as many home games as I can manage, enjoying
the banter amongst our famous supporters, which is
great fun although not always f
