for the construction of much needed new
changing rooms to accommodate the
increasing number of teams we have.
“We have teams at U7s, U8s, U10s and
U15s, a girls’ team, 1st XV and 2nd XV. Our
aim is to have age group teams from U7’s
to U15s; youth, and a ladies team so that
we can be self-sufficient in developing our
own local talent. This is quite challenging
as we have a surfeit of rugby clubs in the
area and all are competing for a limited
pool of players.
“We pride ourselves on being a
Community Club and thanks to the
sterling efforts of the Junior Committee;
we have forged strong links with 3 local
Primary Schools. In fact the local Tycroes
90 Issue 58
Primary school uses our fields for their
sports day.
“We also have close connections
with the Armed Services. Our 1st two
Captains, Latimer Jones and John Jones
are buried at the Somme and four of our
Committee members visited them. This
season’s first team shirts are sponsored
by Poppies and have the two captains
names on the sleeve as well as the Help
for Heroes logo. Additionally, we have
five ex-servicemen on the Committee and
two ex-players serving. Between 1972 and
1993 we would host an annual Boxing
Day fixture against servicemen which was
always a competitive match.
“The future in the short and long term
is going to be quite challenging. We are
in the third year in Division 2 West, and
at the moment looks like we are likely to
maintain our position in the top half of the
division.
“Consolidation of our position is the
main aim, both on and off the field, for
the foreseeable future; there is no point
in striving for promotion if it cannot
be sustained but, with our enthusiastic
Committee,
experienced
coaching
staff, committed players and dedicated
volunteers we will eventually get there.”
