eading Abbey is a fine example of a community
club with a strong set up both on and off the field.
Club Representatives Dave Husbands and Kevin
Tremlett recently took the time to tell us more about the good
work the club has been doing lately.
Kevin told us, “I’ve been involved since 1974. I relocated to
Reading when my Company moved from London. Abbey had
heard of the Company’s move and wrote to me saying they
would be pleased to welcome me and any colleagues interested
in Rugby. Suffice to say here I am as President some 41 years
later.
“The most rewarding thing for me is the honour of
representing the Club as President and seeing the large number
of children and young men and women enjoying their rugby on
and off the field of play. The most challenging thing is keeping
up with them!
“The mood here is excellent at the moment having carried
over from our unbeaten run and promotion last season. The offseason has been first class, with various successful fund raising
events hosted by the club along with excellent attendance at preseason training and preparations for the World Cup celebrations
in our Clubhouse.
“The biggest challenges for us moving forward will be
maintaining contact and involvement from our young players
when they move away to University. Also, we do not pay players
so retaining our home grown players when they are tempted by
offers of pay to play contracts elsewhere is a major challenge at
present. Maintaining sufficient income to cover playing costs
and continuing facilities improvements is an on-going challenge
as well.
