Newtown Newtown Newtown Rugby Club was first established in 1925 and has put together a history of which they have every right to be proud since then as one of the leading sides in Mid Wales. They played their first ever match against Oswestry on 28th March 1925 before disbanding for a period. They re-formed in 1971 and were able to progress well, achieving Welsh Rugby Union membership on the 1st September 1992 for a probationary period before gaining full status in 1995. At present they are based at the Recreation Ground on Pool Road in Powys and they currently compete in Swalec League 3 North. This season their first team has made a storming start to their league campaign, putting together a run of four wins from their first four matches. This sees them sitting pretty at the top of the table with twenty points. This should provide them with the perfect platform from which to go on and put together a successful season. As long as they are able to keep their key players fit it will be difficult for their opponents to prevent them claiming the title. One of the highlights of the team’s early season form has been the attacking brand of rugby that they have been able to produce. This has been reflected by the fact that they have been averaging nearly sixty points a game. This will certainly have meant that anyone attending their fixtures will have been well entertained and should encourage more of the local community to get behind the side in the future. Newtown is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section however and this is reflected by the fact that they also have a number of youth sides running. These teams look to provide young players from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their youngsters can progress in the coming years. Newtown’s fantastic start to the season is a reflection of all of the hard work that has gone into making them a success. Rugby Club Magazine wishes them the best of luck for the rest of the season. www.pitchero.com/clubs/newtownrfc Club Info - www.websiteetc.co.uk - Twitter -: @NewtownRugby Twitter : @Twitter www.sportip.biz 59
