greenock wanderers Youth “Youth development is essential for us. We do not buy players in, so rely on our very successful youth program to generate our future Senior Teams. The Youth section is also key to the financial success of the club and helps us generate Sponsorship. We are one of few clubs in Scotland who have teams at every age group. We insist that the coaches are properly trained and attain a minimum Coaching standard. We have an RDO (Regional Development Officer) that is heavily involved in Recruiting kids from schools in the local area and have started our own Club Youth Academy. The ultimate goal of this is to produce International Players, and to increase the overall standard of Rugby at our club through high quality specialist coaching (Glasgow Warriors & SRU Players and Coaches) and high performance training, to ensure they are physically ready for the challenges of senior rugby.” Community “We are absolutely a Community Club and that role is growing all the time. We are situated in a very Football focused area of the country and work very hard to ensure the town and surrounding area know who we are and what we offer. We are very inclusive of all age groups including a social and veterans team, and are hoping to start developing Girls Youth teams to help supply our Senior ladies team. Our clubhouse is open to non-members for bookings and we often host business meetings, corporate events and other club’s meetings or parties.” Challenges Ambitions “We are very much a bottoms up club, having built an infrastructure and management team to take us forward, however keeping our Senior Players at the club and maintaining our league position are key. In order to do that we need to produce more quality players who will stay in the area. We lose a lot of talent to other clubs and Universities as well as people moving out of town for work commitments or shift working. Managing this by not spending money on recruiting external players or putting the club in debt is a real challenge.” “We have a 5 year plan, much of which we have already accomplished (Building New Clubhouse, introducing a Youth Academy and to have a Ladies Team competing in the National Leagues). However we do need to extend our Clubhouse to help us generate additional Income and, despite our league position this season, we are working to become a Premier 1 Club.” www.greenockwanderers.co.uk www.sportip.biz 49
