Driving down Langford road some may only catch a glimpse of
the brick building and the try posts, and as quickly as they see
it, they forget about it.
For me, hidden behind
the trees, is not only a
building and pitches; this
club, as much as it’s about
rugby, it’s about people,
people of all ages, players,
spectators and families.
Over 3 years ago, at the
age of 29, my better half
who has always been a
fan of rugby, convinced
me to give rugby a go.
“You’ll love it,” she said
“you’re built for it!” So I
did. And from that first
training session, from that
first
mispronunciation
of my name (giving me
my current nickname of
“Slav”), I became part of
something big. Bigger
than a team, or even a
club. One big family, with
a gravity so strong that
the bigger it is the more
people it attracts.
The club welcomed
me with open arms, as
it has in the past and
as it continues to do so,
welcoming people of
all ages and skills to its
Biggy family. Without
the support of fellow
players and coaching
staff I would never have
progressed so far, making
my way up from a total
newbie to a 1st team
player. For a very long
time I considered myself
lucky, but looking at the
past 3 years, every other
person who joined us, was
welcomed this very same
way and received the same
encouragement.
This year my wife and
myself have decided to give
something back to the club;
not only on the pitch, but
also outside of it. I took on
a role of Press and Media
