MAIDSTONE Of course whilst the club’s senior side might well be the flagship for the club, it is not all about 1st XV rugby. The club runs four other senior sides plus a competitive Evergreen XV. The clubs Mustangs (2nd) XV compete in Kent RFU’s Invicta league with the Development XV and the Barbarians playing their fixtures in the Kent RFU junior league structure. 2014-15 was the first season that the club has run a dedicated Development XV as part of a deliberate strategy to provide a structured pathway for youth players to move to senior rugby. Throughout the season they acquitted themselves well with younger players running out alongside some older heads with a number of the young players stepping up to the Mustangs on occasion in the latter part of the season. The intention had originally been to ring-fence the Development XV until the midpoint of the season; however, the decision was taken as that point approached to maintain the side for the duration of the season and the initiative will continue as the club continues to move forward. The Barbarians XV enjoyed a competitive season, finishing in mid-table in their division whilst the Veterans XV remain perhaps the most Corinthian of the sides and continue to enjoy their rugby and the injection of some new blood and other players in the club now qualifying in the veterans category has seen them continue to enjoy some traditional and extremely competitive social fixtures outside of the league structure. Finally, the Evergreen XV now retitled the Late Red Occasionals; having www.maidstonerugby.org.uk- Twitter : @MaidstoneRugby www.sportip.biz 21
