chesham FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Chesham B ased on Chartridge Lane in Buckinghamshire, Chesham Rugby Club currently competes in the Berks/Bucks and Oxon Premier League. They run three senior men’s sides, a women’s team as well as a thriving mini and junior section. They are led by the team of Chairman Simon Harris and President Cliff Davies and have made a considerable amount of progress under their guidance. The club’s core idea is, “if you want a game, you get a game” and they pride themselves on offering reasonable membership fees, competitive rugby, high class coaching and great facilities. They encourage as many people as possible from the local community to get involved and are known as ‘Bucks Friendliest Rugby Club.’ The club has a history of which they have every right to be proud of having first been established on October 22nd 1981 in The Red Lion. Councillor John Downes was at the heart of this, announcing that the club was being formed and inviting further discussion on the broader policies of the club and its future. Downes announced, “I can think of no greater honour than that of playing for one’s town”. To this day they are still made up of many local players but also attract members from further afield. They have certainly flourished over the years and are now a club that provides rugby to all ages, sexes and abilities. The team put together a steady campaign last time around as they compiled a record of eight wins and twelve defeats from their twenty league matches. This saw them finish in a safe mid-table position with 38 points on the board. This should provide the club with a solid platform from which to build as they look ahead to their 2015/16 campaign. As long as they can retain their current group of players and perhaps make one or two quality additions they should be in with a good chance of claiming a higher league finish this time around. It will certainly be interesting to see how they get along and their players are confident of doing well. Chesham Rugby Club has come a long way since being founded to become the superb family establishment that they are today. This is thanks to all the hard work that their Committee has put into making them a success and Rugby Club Magazine would like to wish them the best of luck for the future.
