luctonians Luctonians L uctonians RFC is based at Mortimer Park on Hereford Lane and their first team currently competes in National League 2 North. They are led by the team of President David Thomas and Chairman Simon Whiteman and the club is looking to progress under their guidance. As part of the larger Luctonians Sports Club they are committed to playing an important role in their local area which is highlighted on www.luctonians. co.uk where they state that they pride themselves on, “being a Community Club offering excellent facilities, quality coaching for all and social enjoyment.” As well as rugby the club also caters for cricket and ladies touch rugby, netball and rounders. Last season it would be fair to say that their first team did not perhaps enjoy the campaign they would have liked as they put together a record of eleven wins, a draw and eighteen defeats from their thirty league fixtures. On the plus side they did manage to avoid relegation and compiled a total of 61 points. They will now be keen to have a productive off-season in order to ensure that they are well prepared for 2015/16. As long as they can retain their current group of players and perhaps strengthen with one or two quality additions they should be in with a good chance of pushing on up the table. One positive from their last campaign which helped them stay in the league was the fact that they had a better defensive record than the teams below them. This allowed them to grind out results at times even when they were not playing at their best. This is a testament to the commitment of the players who represented the club and also to the hard work that was put in on the training ground in order to ensure that they are a well drilled unit. If they can build on this they have the potential to be one of the better defensive sides in the league. Luctonians is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section however and this is reflected by the fact that they also have a number of youth sides in place. These teams look to provide young players from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area that they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their youngsters can progress in the coming years.
