perranporth FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/RUGBYCLUBMAG Perranporth P erranporth Rugby Club has been progressing well in recent times, providing people of all ages from their local community with an opportunity to enjoy the game. Chairman Steve Arthur took the time to tell us more about the club. He told us, “I started playing hooker at the club when I was fifteen years old and am now 48! I did leave for a short a while to play elsewhere but came back around 25 years ago. I’ve been on the Committee since coming back and took over the role as Chairman at this year’s AGM. “The mood at the club at the moment is good. We’ve always had a reputation for being a social side and have been able to attract players of a good quality because of that although many have been mavericks! We’ve had minis for thirteen years now and so now we’re producing our own players which has been a major boost for us. 50 Issue 56 “We’re competing in Cornwall 1 which is probably about the right level for us and retaining our place there was pleasing for us. We also made it into the Semi-finals of the Cup which was a good achievement for us. “It is a very welcoming club here so players can always settle in quickly here which I think is important. We are a community club with our own clubhouse for people to use. We have around 200 kids taking part now so we’re providing for a lot of people. “I think one of the biggest challenges that we will face will be player numbers and player commitments. Over the coming years we’re looking to build a one club mentality so that everyone is connected because each of the sides gets on and does their own thing a little at the moment. The teams have been very successful but we hope to integrate it a little more in the future. “We need to build a new clubhouse to enable us to keep moving forwards. We’ve expanded significantly and need to keep up with that development. We want to continue to be a community club that enjoys the social side of the game and always has a good time.”
