Royston
R
oyston Rugby Club enjoyed a season to remember last time as both their first and second teams won silverware. We
caught up with Club President Godfrey Everett to find out what had been behind the club’s success in recent times.
“I’ve been involved with the Club for over
forty years mainly as Fixtures Secretary
but now President also. I went to this
club as it was local to where I lived and
worked and I received an extremely
friendly reception when I began training
with them for some time even though I
travelled to captain my home town club
for two more years.
“As a Fixture Secretary it can be a
challenge during the summer to get the
fixture list set up in a form that most
agree with. It’s become much easier since
the leagues arrived but you still have
gaps to fill. As President it is, mainly, to
ensure the Club is represented well in the
community and county.
“The most rewarding aspects are to see
the enjoyment all the players, from very
young to somewhat older, get from simply
being involved and this is enhanced a
lot with good performance, individual
victories and the overall success of the
teams playing.
“The general mood here is pretty good
at the moment. Our Senior XVs have
shrunk over the last decade but in recent
years we have begun to build again from
an increased membership. Each team is a
pretty well knit group who support each
other really well on both the pitch and
also socially which is important for the
team and Club.
“Our mini and junior section continues
to grow, especially the minis, and on
Sundays it’s a bit like a Thelwell cartoon
without the horses! There are hordes of
them! Last season we had 3 junior sides
at U14, 16 and 17 that are well organised,
successful to the point of very enjoyable
end of season tours.
“The success on the pitch shows that as
a club we punch well above our weight
within the county and surrounding areas.
At mini level last season’s U7s, U9s and
U10s have won ‘competitions’, the top
U9s team being unbeaten all year against
some very good opposition indeed
and the U10s invariably doing well in
competitions at Saracens and county.
“The U14s last year were promoted in
the Herts Middlesex Leagues and won
their County competition, the U16 were
promoted and in the last 4 years the
U17 group have been promoted 3 years
in succession and won their County
competition twice with a squad of only
20.
“The 1st XV play in Herts Middlesex
1 and the 2nds in the Herts Middlesex
Merit Table 5 and after both having very
poor starts to the season recovered to
mid table respectability but then both
won their Cup competitions in April. All
